A Roguelite for Cat Lovers | Clawpunk @ GDC

Clawpunk is a vertical roguelite that lets you take control of nine different super-powered cats with 9 lives as you make your way through procedurally generated levels. While you can take your time and make your way through these levels, you are rewarded for maintaining your momentum. Utilize the unique weapons and abilities to tackle various enemies and challenges. Each character will have their strengths and weaknesses. How you choose to complete each level is up to you.

During this CES demo, Kittens in Timespace/Megabit gave me a chance to check out three of the nine characters. You have access to your all-around melee character, a quick character with a whip, and a slower, heavier character. There is no correct way to approach any encounter. After you deplete your health, you are forced to utilize another character. The good thing is that all progress made on that level is maintained, and if you want, you can pick up items or power-ups you may have missed. You can be careful and try to pick up everything you see, but as I stated, momentum is your friend. As you collect certain orbs and cause more destruction, you fill a gauge that allows you to unlock some sort of power to help you make it through the level.

My time with Clawpunk was fast and hectic. Developer Kittens in Timespace has a healthy obsession with cats, and it shows in their work. Each character has a great design and an interesting set of abilities. The art, music, and gameplay design come together to create a quick punch of fun. We don’t have any word on a release date at this point, but I think Clawpunk is an experience that you need to watch out for. Follow the Steam page to keep up to date with what’s going on.
