I’m Conflicted: Artifical Intelligence Versus Art

Artificial Intelligence has been causing a lot of trouble in the art and gaming worlds. The growth and development of AI is leading to massive layoffs at companies, large and small. Some companies and individuals are directly impacted, while others are experiencing the side effects of this new technology. With this being said, I am still conflicted.

I grew up as an artist, and I have always had an appreciation for those who can express themselves visually. I also work in technology and often have personal projects where AI is a great tool. In the last year or two, generative AI has become extremely popular, and this is starting to cause issues at the same time.

For those who aren’t well-versed in how AI works, there are a couple of key points to note that explain why many people in the creative fields dislike it. AI almost works like a search engine. When you ask it a question, it scours the internet and compiles information on the topic or question that you asked. With generative AI, if I ask it to write a story or make me an image, it utilizes content from other writers and artists. It is almost impossible for AI to return something that is fully original.

AI is still in its early stages. When it comes to regulating the tech, it seems like we haven’t figured that out yet. Artists are constantly running into problems where their art is integrated into some AI creation. It has proven difficult to combat these situations. To some, the AI art seems bland with no personality, but many run to ChatGPT to save money versus paying an artist or graphic designer.

I do think that there can be a future where artificial intelligence is used responsibly. Having a foot on both sides of this situation can be interesting at times, but I am optimistic for the future.
